Guangdong pushes waterborne coatings to prevent organic waste gas

2020-07-15

At present, ozone and PM2.5 are the biggest challenges affecting the air quality improvement in our province. Among them, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) as the culprit of ozone pollution, the main source of its production comes from industrial production, most of which come from upstream and downstream industries related to industrial painting.

On July 1st of this year, the nation's first container manufacturing industry emission standard-Guangdong Province "Container Manufacturing Volatile Organic Compound Emission Standard" (hereinafter referred to as "standard") was officially implemented. The "Standard" stipulates the definition and time division of pollution sources, requirements for pollutant discharge control, requirements for pollutant monitoring, implementation and supervision of the container manufacturing coating production line.

"Water-based production is the key to the industry's prevention and control of VOCs pollution. Five of Guangdong's six major container manufacturers have launched water-based restructuring." Recently, the "Water-based Leading Green Life" sponsored by the Waterborne Platform and co-organized by the Guangdong Coatings Industry Association At the 2016 Container Waterborne Seminar, experts revealed. The "Key Points of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction in Guangdong Province 2016" issued by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission recently also proposed that Guangdong will promote the control of VOCs emissions by 8 container manufacturing companies and 50 automobile and motorcycle manufacturing (surface coating) companies; promote the use of water-based coating.

Water-based can reduce emissions by more than 70%

In the container manufacturing industry, the coatings used are mainly solvent-based coatings. At the same time, at least 10%-20% of the diluent needs to be added during the coating process. The main components are toluene and xylene, which will generate a large amount of VOCs.

The reporter learned from the seminar that my country is a major container manufacturing country, and more than 95% of the world's containers are manufactured in my country. Guangdong is the main base for container production in my country. The annual designed output of the container is about 1.5 million TEU, and the actual output is about 1 million TEU, accounting for about 30% of the world. The VOCs emissions are more than 70,000 tons.

Experts at the meeting introduced that about 40% of the current VOCs emissions are related to industry, and about 80% of them are related to the coatings industry.

On March 22 this year, the China Container Industry Association signed the "Convention on the Self-Discipline of VOCs Governance of the China Container Industry Association" in Shanghai (hereinafter referred to as the "Convention"), calling on the entire industry to unify the pollution control of VOCs from the source and give up the transitional end The governance plan is led by the four major box-making groups that occupy the absolute leading position in the industry, and the upstream and downstream of the supply chain cooperate to comprehensively promote the application of environmentally friendly water-based paints and formulate strict technical standards for environmentally friendly products and processes.

The "Convention" also stipulates that if members of the association are found to be in violation of the regulations, they will be punished according to 800 yuan/TEU to enhance the binding of the "Convention".

With the increasing attention paid to environmental protection issues, with the introduction of various regulations and conventions, container coatings have gradually changed to water-based.

Compared with the old process of direct discharge without treatment, the use of new-type water-based paints in the container manufacturing industry is not only low-toxic or non-toxic, but also not flammable. The production process and paint transfer are safe. More importantly, the volatile during the production of water-based paints Organic matter (VOC) is greatly reduced. Even if the emissions are not treated, the air pollution is very low, and the goal of reducing emissions is achieved.

According to estimates, container manufacturing enterprises implement water-based transformation, and the annual VOC emission reduction can reach up to 70%-94%. Take Dongguan Maersk, which completed the transformation of the production line in July 2014 as an example. After achieving 100% water-based production, a total of about 280,000 TEUs of water-based containers have been produced, saving up to 3633 tons of VOC emissions.

In addition to the advantages of reducing emissions, waterborne coatings have other advantages. Han Wenyu, a member of the waterborne platform, said that the corrosion resistance of waterborne container coatings is not only at the location of physical damage, but also the corrosion and diffusion of primers and topcoats are very limited, and the primers near the damage can still protect the metal well. In the key positions that affect the life of the cabinet, such as the bottom frame, the top plate, the corner pieces, and the rear frame weld, the water-based paint also performs very well, and there is almost no rust on the cabinet.

"Suppliers should increase investment in research and development of water-based technologies and technological innovation to provide stronger technical support for emission reduction." To create a fair environment for companies to reduce emissions.
