Zinc-rich primer prevents metal corrosion through cathodic protection mechanism. Zinc has a lower potential than iron, so in a corrosive environment, zinc will be preferentially oxidized, thereby protecting the iron substrate. Iron oxide red primer prevents corrosive media from contacting the metal surface by forming a physical barrier.
