In the 1980s, acrylic coatings entered the Chinese market under the identity of “architectural latex paint.” Thanks to their excellent gloss and color retention as well as easy application, they quickly captured a significant share of the exterior wall coating market.

In 1927, the first industrialized alkyd resin was developed at General Electric in the United States. Using vegetable oils and polyols as key raw materials, this synthetic pathway marked a major shift in the coatings industry—from natural resins to synthetic resins.

In 1943, Dow Corning first achieved the industrial production of silicone resins, introducing Si–O bonds into coating systems and ushering in a new era of heat-resistant coatings. Eighty years later, silicone coatings have evolved from offering a single heat-resistant function to a multifunctional system providing weather resistance, anti-fouling, anti-icing, and insulation.

In 1937, the Bayer laboratory in Germany first synthesized polyurethane resin. More than 80 years later, polyurethane coatings have become the “king of topcoats” in the industrial protective coatings sector. They account for over 90% of topcoat applications in high-end equipment, and are widely recognized for their excellent gloss retention, color stability, weather resistance, and chemical resistance.

In the 1930s, Germany pioneered the chlorination modification of rubber, giving rise to chlorinated rubber resins. By the 1980s, chlorinated rubber coatings and ambient-cure epoxy coatings were regarded as the two leading systems for corrosion protection worldwide.
