Paint is a mixture of organic or inorganic materials to decorate and protect items. The origin of paint is inconclusive. In 6000 BC, China had improved paint by baking roasted inorganic compounds and organic pigments. Paint was used for painting and decoration in caves in France and Spain in 1500 BC. In 1500 BC, Egyptians made blue and red pigments with dyes such as indigo and madder, but the paint was still incomplete. In the 18th century, due to the development and utilization of linseed oil and zinc oxide, the paint industry developed rapidly.

In the 20th century, the paint process has undergone significant development. Various colors of paint with greater adhesion, higher gloss, flame retardancy, corrosion resistance and thermal stability have appeared in the early days. Most of them used vegetable oil as the main raw material, so they were called "Paints", such as cooked tung oil that is healthy and environmentally friendly. Whether it is a traditional coating product using natural materials as a raw material, or a modernly developed coating product using synthetic chemical products as raw materials, both belong to organic chemical polymer materials, and the coating film formed is a type of polymer compound. According to the classification of modern chemical products, coatings belong to fine chemical products. Modern coatings are gradually becoming a class of multifunctional engineering materials and an important industry in the chemical industry.
