The new bactericidal coating was developed by a team led by Yang Jinglun, professor of the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering and the Department of Environmental and Sustainable Development of HKUST. The new bactericidal coating uses a special antibacterial polymer that can form a bactericidal film on the surface of different materials such as metal, concrete, wood, glass, plastic, fabric, leather, fiber, etc., and then destroy the microbial coating and biomolecules , The sterilization period can last up to 90 days.

The research results show that the new bactericidal coating can not only effectively kill 99.9% of measles, mumps, rubella and other highly infectious viruses, but also 99.9% of cat calicivirus. Feline calicivirus is regarded as an indicator for detecting the antiviral effect, and its drug resistance is higher than that of all coronaviruses.

The HKUST team recently conducted clinical trials in a public hospital and nursing home in Hong Kong, and confirmed that the new bactericidal coating is very effective in killing resistant microbial bacteria. In the hospital curtain test, the number of resistant bacteria decreased by more than 98.7% within 3 weeks.

In addition, the new bactericidal coating will not change the appearance and feel of the substance, and can prevent microorganisms from adhering to the surface of the object, thereby achieving long-term antibacterial.
